About Key Vocab Kit - Bold
Build a larger, more organized button system with the FluentPet Key Vocab Kit in Bold.
Designed for learners who are ready for more than a basic starter layout, this kit includes 12 Speak Up! recordable buttons, six interlocking HexTiles, 35 ideogram stickers, and pre-installed batteries. Record useful words in your own voice, group related concepts by tile, and model them consistently during everyday routines.
The six Bold HexTiles feature bright, distinct colors that can help people organize vocabulary into categories such as food, play, places, people, and social words. The compact buttons require light pressure to activate, making the system approachable for cats, small dogs, and larger learners.
Button communication develops gradually and varies from pet to pet. This kit provides more room to expand, but thoughtful modeling still matters considerably more than simply deploying twelve buttons and waiting for a press conference.

Best for:
- Dogs and cats expanding beyond a small starter vocabulary
- Pet parents who want to organize words into clear categories
- Introducing a wider range of choices, requests, and routine-based concepts
- Multi-room or grouped communication layouts
- Learners who already understand one or more buttons
- New learners whose families want additional room to grow
Organizing vocabulary:
- Assign each HexTile a general category to create a more predictable layout.
- Possible groupings include:
- Food and water
- Play and activities
- Places and movement
- People and animals
- Social words
- Needs and body-related words
- Keep frequently used buttons easy to reach and maintain a consistent location for each word. Constantly rearranging the board can make learning harder, much like someone relocating every key on your keyboard because they felt creative.
How to introduce new words:
- Begin with one or two concepts tied to clear, repeatable routines.
- Record each word using a consistent voice and pronunciation.
- Press the button immediately before the corresponding event or action.
- Model words naturally throughout the day without physically forcing your pet to press.
- Wait until your pet shows familiarity before adding several new concepts.
- Respond to intentional presses whenever reasonably possible.
- Interpret each press alongside body language, location, timing, and surrounding context.
Suggested vocabulary:
- "Outside"
- "Food"
- "Water"
- "Play"
- "Walk"
- "Help"
- "Treat"
- "Yes"
- "No"
- "Mom"
- "Dad"
Choose words that are relevant to your household and that you can demonstrate clearly. Abstract concepts can be introduced later, after your learner has mastered more concrete and consistently actionable words.
Training notes:
- Progress varies significantly among individual animals.
- Some pets may begin pressing buttons quickly, while others require weeks or months of consistent modeling.
- More buttons do not automatically create better communication. Expand gradually to avoid overwhelming your pet or making the layout difficult to navigate.
- Repeated, random, or contextually unclear presses are normal during learning.
- Never punish accidental presses, repeated requests, incorrect use, or lack of interest.
- Button use should remain voluntary and connected to positive everyday interaction.
- Placement and compatibility
- Place the HexTiles on a clean, dry, level indoor surface.
- Connect the tiles using their interlocking edges.
- Leave enough open space for your pet to approach, turn, and press comfortably.
- Avoid blocking stairs, entrances, hallways, or heavily traveled areas.
- Each HexTile accommodates up to six compatible FluentPet Speak Up! buttons.
- Optional edge pieces shown in some product imagery are sold separately.
Battery notes:
- The buttons arrive with pre-installed batteries.
- Each Speak Up! button uses three LR44/AG13 alkaline batteries.
- Battery life varies with playback frequency, recording length, storage conditions, and general use.
- Replace batteries only with the manufacturer-specified type.
